Can anyone explain why landspouts seem to only really ever occur in the West-central part of tornado alley? I remember reading somewhere that they’re almost exclusive to Eastern Colorado and Western Nebraska/Kansas. If I had to guess, I’d say it has something to do with the higher ground elevation and the proximity to the Rockies, but again that’s just a guess.

Even a supervolcano would be nowhere near as deadly as Io’s supervolcanoes due to Earth’s atmosphere. We Earthlings are so lucky that we don’t have these volcanoes. That’s not saying volcanoes on Earth aren’t dangerous.

5/18/80 is the eruption “everyone is talking about” (e.g. da media) to this day; what many either don’t realize or forget is that there was a 2nd eruption the following Sunday (5/25/80) and several more to follow in the next 2-3 years (I know because our family lived in a two story house in Portland, Oregon and I saw almost all of these first-hand from my bedroom window) that could be considered “major” (even if none of these quite had the destructive effect 5/18 had).

According to radical environmentalists this eruption should have been the end of creation resulting in every kind of catastrophe. Interestingly how well the earth dealt with this catastrophic event and even the sight has recovered.
